Tips on how to lower cholesterol levels.
No need to mope. A goal to lower cholesterol shouldn't be considered a burden. There are cholesterol management programs that do not suggest you make life-altering changes. While lifestyle changes have been main topics in discussions on achieving lower cholesterol levels, they are not meant to make patients do major modifications and suffer identity crisis as a result. These changes are very easy and adaptable. For one, these are simple suggestions like riding the bike everyday even for at least 30 minutes, instead of just doing it on Sundays.
While there are a number of ways to lower cholesterol, there are two major steps you may try doing. One is to cut down on cholesterol intake and the other, cutting down or avoiding foods rich in saturated fats. Most sources of these two are animal products. Another type of fat which should be avoided is the trans fats, which are present in foods as hydrogenated oils. Processed foods like snack foods are rich sources of trans fats.
Most foods that claim to lower cholesterol levels may indicate "no cholesterol" or "cholesterol-free" on their labels. However, these are not entirely true. Some of these products actually contain minimal amount of cholesterol. But the most important thing you can do to verify their claim is to check the labels when shopping. While a small amount of cholesterol would probably not have any effect on your cholesterol level, do check out for the presence of saturated fats. Aside from the fact that these fats won't lower cholesterol levels, they are responsible in increasing cholesterol production more than the body requires. As a rule, companies are being mandated to provide labels containing the list of ingredients of the food products and the list of nutrients and minerals according to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).
While we can't alter our family history of high blood cholesterol levels, we can change our eating patterns to lower cholesterol levels. Doing this would mean some of the following: eating more garlic, eating soy foods and soy products, increasing intake of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, eating oats and other sources of soluble fiber, exercising, and substituting the ingredients containing high saturated fats to those containing less or none.
Medications that are said to lower cholesterol levels should not be used unless advised by a doctor. While a lot of these drugs are being given by health practitioners to high cholesterol patients, individuals should not experiment and self-prescribe these medications.
Contrasting stands on the diet-heart theory and the lipid hypothesis are sensitive issues on the medical field. So while they are arguing, let's do our own research. Awareness is the best key to successfully lower our risks for heart disease.
